The English Language Center is committed to excellent teaching of English as a second language and dedicated service. We work together to accomplish this by:
The English Language Center strives to strengthen the link between second language theory and practice. We are a resource for faculty and students at BYU to conduct sound research.
We seek to have a research-based curriculum and are willing to challenge traditional practices in response to new research findings.
We actively support and encourage classroom-based research at the ELC with the goal of developing innovative and effective curricula and materials that will further the understanding of how languages are acquired.
We carry out sound assessment practices at both the classroom and program level to refine the curriculum as well as to answer broader research questions.
To fulfill the mission of being "the acknowledged language capital of the world," the research that is conducted at the ELC is shared through presentations at professional conferences and submissions to journals.
