A Biography of My Mother
by Patricia Dominguez

Read other essays by Patricia Dominguez

Eva Azucena Torres was born in Selva, in the province of Santiago del Estero, Argentina, on December 18, 1935. She was and is an excellent teacher, mother, and daughter. She has always been a simple person, very nice and compassionate. she loves people and they love her.

When Eva was born, her mother was only sixteen. Her father was very young, too. He was twenty-one years old. They are Dominga Medina and Gabriel Torres. Back then, their lives were very hard. Her mother was a homemaker, and her father was a railroad employee. Her only brother is four years younger than she is. His name is Uberfil Ebelio. He is so funny! He is my favorite uncle.

When she was a little girl, Eva began to play as a teacher with her friends; then she helped them to prepare their homework. She always remembers this time when she was a girl. When she was ten years old, she decided that one day she would be a teacher, because she felt this vocation inside her heart. At this time, she and her family were in Santiago del estero, but then they moved to different parts of the Cordoba and Santa Fe provinces, because her father had to move for his job.

At last, when she was twenty-two years old, Eva graduated as an elementary school teacher from the National School of Ceres in the province of Santa Fe. Immediately, she began to teach in a poor country school in San Eugenio, Santa Fe. She was alone in this place, but the people were very nice to her.

When Eva was twenty-five, she met her future husband, Fausto Dominguez. They were at my aunt's house for a family reunion. My father introduced himself immediately, because he saw here and liked her a lot. This reminds me of Fito Paez's song, "I didn't look for anything, but I saw you." In a few months, they were engaged. Two years later, on September 15, 1962, they were married in Galvez, province of Santa Fe. They lived in Galvez only on weekends, because my mother had just transferred to another country school near Galvez a few months before her wedding. She worked and stayed in this place from Monday mornings until Friday afternoons. My father worked in another city, Rosario. He was a railroad employee; he worked as a locomotives instructor.

When Eva was twenty-nine, she became a mother. She and her husband were dreaming of this day for a long time. This night, Eva and Fausto went to a party. As soon as they came back to the house, her contractions began. So, on January 7, 1964, I, Patricia Lilia del Valle, was born in Galvez, Santa Fe. My mother told me that my father cried a lot this night. He felt very happy, and so did she. My mother and my father gave me a lot of love all the time. I am an only child.

In 1974, when he was only forty-four years old, my father died of a heart attack. My mother and I never forgot this day, September 12, 1974, which was Teacher's Day. It was a dark day for our small family. I was only ten years old, and I imagined that he would come back someday. My poor mom was very sad all the time. Every Saturday, we went to the cemetery. Two years later, she started to feel better, but she never married again. She lived all her time for her daughter, her parents, her students, and her plants.

Now, Eva isn't working. She has been retired since 1987. At last she takes a rest, because she has worked a lot all her life. She cares for her beautiful plants, walks a lot, visits her mother and her friend Amelia, listens to the radio (she loves the radio), and writes a lot (her diary, letters, etc.). She has beautiful handwriting. Her father always said, "In this life, one should always have very good handwriting." (He passed away almost two years ago, on July 13, 1998.) In Eva's life, she hates only one thing: cooking. Therefore, her mother prepares the food every day.

I admire my mother. She brought me to this world, cared for me, and taught me a lot (she was my teacher in all my elementary school years and taught me as my mother at home). She also listened to me all the time. She is my protector and angel in this world. In the future, if I could be a mother, I would like to be as my dear mother: a special, simple woman with a lot of love to give.

His family was very poor and when he was five years old his mother got divorced from his father. He went to live with his father and stepmother, Aurora Costa. He didn’t like to live with his father but he had to.

Jose Santana was 21 years old while he was studying journalism when he had the opportunity to work for a radio station, that was his dream; he had a nice voice. At this time he became a good announcer. In 1957, he moved to Recife and began to work at the Commercial radio station. At this time, many people knew him, because he was a famous soccer commentator. His life became to be easier. He had money, success and carism. Every loved the way he talked on the radio because he had a low voice.

Jose Santana moved to Fortaleza and met Newly Barbosa and got married on December 31, 1957. On Feb 20, 1961 his first daughter, Lorene Fatima Barbosa Santana was born. His marriage wasn’t too well because he traveled a lot and didn’t have time for his family. In January 24, 1972, Ivson Barbosa Santana was born. Ivson was the hope that his marriage could get better. His marriage wasn’t going so good so they got divorced in 1973.

The biggest day in Jose Santana’s life was when he received the notice that he was going to Germany to be a commentator for the soccer World Cup of 1974. That was a very important event on his life because there’s a lot of competition for that job.

In 1976 Jose Santana went to Los Angeles to work on a soccer game. He traveled a lot working in soccer. He went to Mexico, Hungary, Germany, Argentina, Japan and many other countries.

After marrying two other ladies, Jose Santana was marrying his fourth wife Maria Jose de Melo Bonfim in 1988. In 1994 Caio Cesar de Melo Bonfim, the youngest son of Jose Santana. Caio Cesar’s birth was very important because Jose Santana had the opportunity to give the best for him.

In March 1991 he discovered that he had throat cancer, and he didn’t have too much time left in his life. When his friends and other people knew that he was sick, they started donate money for him to go to the hospital in the United States.

He went to Houston in 1992 for a surgery. The doctors in the Medical Center visitor’s lodge said, “In Houston, you might not be cured; however, you won’t die from pain”. His wife Maria Jose decided to pray every day and night in the hospital. Everybody was there to visit his bedroom and they prayed together. That was the most that they could do.

On August 22, the doctors said, “You don’t have cancer anymore”. They were surprised how that could have happened. I think that was a very good job that the doctor’s had done on him.

Today Jose Santana is still alive after eight years of struggling with cancer. He lives in Recife, Brazil. He doesn’t work as a commentator, because he doesn’t have a good and nice voice anymore. He has written two books about his life.

I had the opportunity to be his niece and neighbor, for me he’s a hero because of all the things he’s been through, he never complained. He is a person that always has hope that things will always be better.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
by Francisco Rebollo

Read other essays by Francisco Rebollo

One night I had a dream. I dreamed about a large field crowded with wildflowers and beautiful birds. In my dream, I could see the clouds playing freely with the stars and the wind singing happily its amazing songs. In one of these songs, I heard a desperate son agreeing with the ghost of his father. He was frightened and sad. Suddenly I woke up. I tried to remember the song that I had heard. The song not only returned to my mind, but it returned like a loud lament. I will not ever forget it.

On a cold winter day, January 27, 1756, in Salzburg, Austria, was born a little boy. His parents, Anna Maria and Leopold Mozart, baptized him as Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, but his family called him Wolfgang. Wolfgang had one older sister, Maria Anna Wallurga. Her family knew her as Nannerl. Leopold Mozart worked as a court composer and assistant conductor to the orchestra in Salzburg. Also, Leopold played the violin and published a textbook about how to play it.

Young Mozart was a good child. He was happy, loving, and funny. He did not attend school. His father taught him a lot of things about music at home. Leopold started teaching Nannerl when she was seven. Mozart was too young to learn. At least his father thought in this manner. Nevertheless, when Leopold came home one night from his work, he found the little Wolfgang busy with music paper. Mozart had written a piano concert, but one so difficult that no one could play it! He was just four years old.

In January of 1768, when Mozart was 12, he traveled with his family to Vienna. There they met with the Austrian Emperor Joseph the Second. The Emperor told Mozart that he ought to write an Italian opera. Mozart accepted without a thought. The result was La Finta Simplice. This opera was not performed at first because the other composers were very angry. They could not understand that a child of 12 had written an opera.

In 1769, Mozart began some trips through Europe. In this year Wolfgang and his father Leopold went to Italy. There Mozart wrote a new opera,Mitridate, re di Ponto. In successive trips to Italy he would write two more operas: Ascanio in Alba, and Lucio Silla, (1771, 1772). In 1777, Mozart traveled with his mother to France, where he composed the Paris Symphony. Mozart brought with him a sad memory from France. His mother died in Paris in 1778.

When Mozart returned to Salzburg, he worked as a court organist. In 1781, Mozart wrote his first great opera, Idomeneo. Its first performance was on the 29th of January 1781. This performance was an unusual success. Ramm, the oboist, said when the concert was done, "I was half-crazy with delight. I have never heard any music which made such a deep impression upon me."

In 1782, Mozart started a new life. He got married to Constance Weber in August 1782. In the beginning, it was a happy marriage. Nevertheless, the problems started soon. Constance became pregnant very quickly, but the child died in infancy. Suddenly, the relationship in their marriage changed. Mozart started to spend his time at crazy parties and to spend their money in the wrong manner. As a consequence, they had a lot of problems paying bills. Mozart's relationship with his father Leopold was also affected. Leopold knew that his son was spending his time crazily. On the other hand, it was not a problem for the creative capacity of Mozart. He kept composing wonderful works.

In 1786, Mozart composed The Marriage of Figaro. He also wrote the great piano concerts and the string quartets dedicated to his dear friend Haydn. After this opera, Mozart composed his most famous works, Don Giovanni, Cosi Fan Tutte, and The Magic Flute.

One day, in 1791, a strange person visited Mozart with an anonymous letter asking him to write a requiem mass. Mozart saw this letter as an invitation from destiny. He knew he was going to die soon. He was right. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died in poverty on December 5, 1791. His body was thrown into a pauper's grave in the churchyard of St. Mark. One week later, when Constance went with flowers to Mozart's body, she could not find the grave. Mozart's grave was not marked and his body was not identified. In this manner, the greatest musical genius that the world has ever known died.

Now, I can see the little Mozart asking forgiveness from his father. Then, I remember my dream, the loud lament, and the amazing sounds that accompanied it. It was music, but it was not just music. It was the spirit of Mozart that shall live forever.

The Biography of Gordon B. Hinckley
by Martha Torres

Read other essays by Martha Torres

President Gordon B. Hinckley was born on June 23,1910 in Salt Lake City. His parents were Bryant Stringham Hinckley and Ada Bitner Hinckley. President Hinckley has three sisters and one brother, Ruth, Ramona, Sylvia, and Sherman. When Gordon was sixteen months, he was joined by his brother Sherman. Gordon and Sherman were very good brothers. He was older, but Sherman was longer, faster, and stronger.

When Gordon was a child, he had problem with his health. He suffered from allergies, asthma, and hay fever. Also, the heavy concentration of soot and other pollutants became a problem for him. He contracted a severe case of whooping cough. A doctor told Ada the only remedy was clear, country air. His father had a five-acre farm in the rural East Millcreck area of the Salt Lake Valley, and they built a small summer home there.

His mother was a strict disciplinarian, but Bryant never raised a hand to his children. The children also felt secure about their parents' relationship. The Hinckley children had many opportunities to work on the farm. They had to tend horses and cows. Also, they had rows in the large garden to weed. The family loved the farm life, but they enjoyed returning to their home downtown each fall.

Gordon was about five years of age when he first felt spiritual feelings. He was crying from the pain of an earache. There were not wonder drugs at the time. His mother prepared a bag of table salt and put it on the stove to warm. His father softly put his hands upon his head and gave him a blessing, rebuking the pain and the illness by the authority of the holy priesthood and in the name of Jesus Christ. His father took him tenderly in his arms and placed the bag of warm salt at his ear. The pain subsided and left. He fell asleep in his father's secure embrace. Hinckley said, "This is the earliest remembrance I have of the authority of the priesthood in the name of the Lord" ("My Testimony," April Conference 2000, President Gordon B. Hinckley).

President Gordon B Hinckley, after graduating from the University of Utah in 1932, served a two-year mission to the British Isles, London European Mission. When he was on a mission, his testimony became strong. Each morning he read the Gospel of John together with his companion, commenting on each verse. President Hinckley made a most excellent record in his mission.

Two years after returning from his mission, he got married on April 29, 1937 to Marjorie Pay, in the Salt Lake Temple. In the same year, he was called as a member of the Sunday School General Board. For twenty years, he served as executive secretary of the Radio, Publicity, and Literature Committee of the Church, responsible for all Church Public Communications. In 1951, President Hinckley was called as executive secretary of the General Missionary Committee, managing the entire missionary program of the Church, and served in this capacity for seven years. He was then called as a General Authority. For three years he served as an Assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

President Hinckley was ordained to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles on 5 October 1961. For twenty years he serve as an Apostle. On 23, July 1981 he was called into the first presidency to serve as a counselor, and on 2 December 1982, he served as a second counselor. Since 10 November 1985 he served as first counselor to President Ezra Taft Benson.

President Hinckley was ordained Prophet on 12 March 1995. As a General Authority his church assignments have taken him around the world, and he has dedicated more temples than any other leader in the history of the Church. President Hinckley has written and edited several Church books and numerous manuals, pamphlets, and scripts. Furthermore, President Hinckley has been active in community and business affairs, serving as a board member of a number of business corporations and as chairman of several of these.

President Hinckley has a testimony of the God of the universe, the Father of us all, and his Son the Lord Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, our Redeemer, the Author of our salvation, the Prince of Peace. His goals are to dedicate more temples around the world. I think that President Hinckley is a great person, and he loves people. Also, he is very enthusiastic, and he makes me happy when he is speaking. I love him, and I know he is the Prophet of God.
